Olivia Heist-Stanish

Welcome to my portfolio, where I present three series of my most recent work. Each piece is the translation of my thoughts and emotions into visual art, exploring human nature and the world around us.  Through my creations, I delve into how experiences shape our identities, self-perception, and reflect on the journey of life as well as our intrinsic connection to nature. Join me on this artistic exploration that invites contemplation and connection.

Dreamscapes in Oil

This series of oil paintings centers around a recurring figure: a lion whose mane subtly resembles the petals of a flower. Historically, the lion has been a symbol of power, wisdom, and masculinity. In these pieces, however, the lion is not just a representation of dominance but also of innocence in contrast to the often complicated and morally ambiguous nature of human masculinity. By portraying the lion with a flower-like mane, I emphasize the deep, innate connection animals have with nature, who are living in harmony with their environment and acting out of instinct rather than desire or manipulation. Unlike men, lions do not lust or scheme; their actions are direct, honest, and rooted in survival. In this way, the lion becomes a symbol of a purer, more grounded form of being—one that is powerful yet uncorrupted. Each painting captures a moment where this innocence is not only present but honored and protected.

Ink on Paper

In my collection of ink drawings, I use the permanence of ink to reflect the lasting impact of the experiences that shape us from the moment we come into existence. The washed or bare backgrounds are light, ethereal, and represent the clean slate we are born with. Yet, almost instantly, that blankness begins to change. Our world starts to change us, through sight, sound, emotion and from that point on, we are in a constant state of transformation. Each mark is deliberate and indelible, just as every experience becomes part of our personal landscape. Within each piece are small, often hidden scenes or figures—glimpses of a narrative, identity or nature that require time, attention, and presence to uncover. The patterns and textures mirror the complexity of the human experience. These works invite contemplation and remind us that there is always more beneath what we first perceive. We cannot understand, empathize, or connect with another without first taking the time to look deeper. In a world quick to judge or assume, these pieces are a quiet call for patience, curiosity, and compassion.

Self-Portraits in Oil

This collection of self-portraits, created in oil on paper or canvas, explores our shifting ideas of self-perception. Each piece is a visual translation of how I see myself and how that image changes depending on mood, emotion, and the often fragile balance between feeling beautiful and feeling flawed. These self-portraits are about capturing a moment, a mood, or a version of myself that exists in a specific emotional space. My ongoing curiosity with how we perceive ourselves and how that might differ from how others see us is at the core of this series. This process is an important part of my artistic practice because it allows me to investigate not only my own identity but also the broader human tendency to construct, distort, and reinterpret the self.
